His Excellency Abdullah Mohammed AlOwais

H.E. Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Owais serves as Chairman of the Sharjah Department of Culture. He is also Vice Chairman of the Supreme Committee for Human Resources (Civil Service) and chairs the Implementation Committee for the initiative of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah to establish Houses of Poetry across the Arab world, as well as the Supreme Committee for the “Sharjah Cultural Days Around the World” project. He is also a Board Member of the Sharjah Book Authority and Editor-in-Chief of seven cultural magazines published monthly by the Department of Culture: Al Rafid, Sharjah Cultural, Al Heera from Sharjah, Al Qawafi, Al Wusta, Al Sharqiya, and Al Masrah.

His Excellency was appointed the first Director of the House of Poetry in Sharjah in 1997 and later served as Director of Sharjah Television from 1998 to 2001. He also served as a Member of the National Media Council and the Board of Directors of the National Council for Tourism and Antiquities. He is a founding member of the Arab Theatre Institute and previously chaired the Supreme Coordination Committee for Documentation and Research in Sharjah. He also served on the Executive Committee responsible for preparing the “Heart of Sharjah” dossier for submission to UNESCO for World Heritage consideration from 2013 to 2017 and was a Member of the Supreme Committee of the Emirates Appreciation Award for Arts, Literature and Sciences in its inaugural edition in 2006.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in technology management from New England College in the United States. He also won first place in the poetry competition organised by the Ministry of Information and Culture in 1996 to mark the 25th Anniversary of UAE National Day.
